God is in the Recovery Business

Alcoholics Anonymous is a solid program of suggestions that has helped millions to recover from alcohol and drugs. The AA program recognizes that recovering from drug abuse alone can leave a void that need to be filled spiritually because studies have proved that drug abuse is yet but a symptom revealing issues of a host of problems or demons that still exist after the drugs and alcohol are gone.

Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously. But where and how were we to find this Power? Well, that’s exactly what this book is about. Its main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself which will solve your problem. That means we have written a book which we believe to be spiritual as well as moral. And it means, of course, that we are going to talk about God. AA Big Book p.45 We Agnostic

Perhaps there is a better way—we think so. For we are now on a different basis; the basis of trusting and relying upon God. We trust infinite God rather than our finite selves. We are in the world to play the role He assigns. AA Big Book p. 68 How it Works

What exactly is that role for me? What does God say that role is?

Step 12 of the program suggests: Having a experience as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to pratice these princilpes in all our affairs.

This Step slightly parallels this scripture:

Matthew 28:18-20 NLT

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Clearly as the Twelve Steps of AA are designed to help people remedy their spiritual malady of alcohol, drugs, it is also designed to help us from the spiritual separation from God. The Good News is God is in the RECOVERY business!

Remember that we deal with alcohol—cunning, baffling, powerful! Without help it is too much for us. But there is One who has all power—that One is God. May you find Him now! Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. We asked His protection and care with complete abandon.. AA Big Book pp.58-59 How it Works

The parallel of a half measure is consistant with this passage:

Revelation 3:15-16 KJV

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

In many cases with faith and recovery, people lose thier power, flame, drive, personal conviction to stay focused and remain HOT for what God has set before them to accomplish. Some fail after twenty plus years of sobriety. In those cases ive noticed the lack or non-existance of faith through Jesus Christ. Growing your faith in Jesus Christ is the full measure.

In this book you read again and again that faith did for us what we could not do for ourselves. We hope you are convinced now that God can remove whatever self-will has blocked you off from Him. AA Big Book pp.70-71 How it Works

The self-will, pride, equates to sin. The intoxication, drunkenness, being loaded, high, the alcohol, drugs, the sickness of addiction all boils down to idolatry. Plainly it keeps you separated from God, and in addiction, it is all that you seek.

We never apologize to anyone for depending upon our Creator. We can laugh at those who think spirituality the way of weakness. Paradoxically, it is the way of strength. The verdict of the ages is that faith means courage. All men of faith have courage. They trust their God. We never apologize for God. Instead we let Him demonstrate, through us, what He can do. AA Big Book p.68 How it Works

What does God want to do? Salvation. God wants to recover your soul. Due to our self-will / sin we have separated ourselves from God.

John 3:15-17 NLT

so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

Romans 10:9-10 NLT

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.

Pay close attention to the words in verse 10. This is the pathway of being right with God, its by believing in your heart that Jesus Christ is Lord and confessing it with your mouth, witnessing or plainly saying it. Now your SPIRITUAL HOUSE is in order. Jesus Christ is Lord! I am saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, I believe. Now the foundation of a RELATIONSHIP with Jesus Christ is forming. Now Step 3 will take on a new meaning:

Step 3. Made a DECISION to turn our WILL and our LIVES OVER to the CARE of God AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM.

This is how Bill W. and Dr.Bob founders of AA came to understand God;

I must turn in all things to the I must turn in all things to the Father of Light who presides over us all. of Light who presides over us all. AA Big Book p14 Bill’s Story

James 1:17 KJV

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

If you think you are an atheist, an agnostic, a skeptic, or have any other form of intellectual pride which keeps you from accepting what is in this book, I feel sorry for you. If you still think you are strong enough to beat the game alone, that is your affair. But if you really and truly want to quit drinking liquor for good and all, and sincerely feel that you must have some help, we know that we have an answer for you. It never fails, if you go about it with one half the zeal you have been in the habit of showing when you were getting another drink. Your Heavenly Father wil never let you down. AA Big Book p.181 A Doctor’s Nightmare

AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM… this has to be the most misunderstood statement of the program and people have skewed it and twisted its meaning. The WE refers to the founders and original members of the program. Which is the basis of RARELY HAVE WE SEEN A PERSON FAIL WHO HAS THOROUGHLY FOLLOWED OUR PATH.

Matthew 11:28-30 KJV

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, AND LEARN OF ME; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

The answers will come, if your own house is in order. But obviously you cannot transmit something you haven’t got. See to it that your RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM IS RIGHT and great events will come to pass for you and countless others. This is the Great Fact for us. AA Big Book p. 164 A Vision for You

Romans 10:10 provides the answer to how to get “your house in order” with God. This is the crucial component to recovey, the cure for the spiritual malady ( sickness) and the Salvation the God wants for us (recovery). The writers of the AA Big Book clearly new the “Solution”. But due to the secular world they chose to write the book in such a way that it would be all inclusive, but placed enough “clues” in the book that would lead the ones with the faith the size of a mustard seed hopefully to God through His Son Jesus Christ, and leave enough of a thumb print of God that those who believe will recognize the origin of the program.

In closing,

Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny

May God bless you and keep you—until then. AA Big Book A Vision for You p. 164
